G&S Supply Co. was founded in 1990 by John Steele and his business partner, Cohen Gaskins Jr., but John’s path to entrepreneurship began much earlier. At just 18 years old, he started his working career as a helper on a beer truck for Pearlstine Distributors. After several years gaining hands-on experience, he moved on to Lowe’s Companies, where he continued building the skills and industry knowledge that would eventually lead him to start his own business.

In the early years, G&S focused on furnishing both materials and labor for builders and homeowners throughout the Tri-County area, carving out a niche in the exterior supply business. A few years after the company’s founding, Gaskins sold his share to pursue other interests. Reflecting on that time, Steele recalls, “We were so broke I couldn’t afford to change the name.” The G&S logo remained, and over time it became a familiar sight throughout the Lowcountry, with trucks rolling through neighborhoods and job sites. Even today, many customers still call the office for estimates saying, “I saw your truck.”

From the beginning, G&S has been a true family effort. John’s father, affectionately known as “JB the Gutter Man,” led seamless gutter sales, while his children, John David and Kelly, spent summers working at the distribution center. His brother Steven and several nephews also played key roles in helping build the company during its early years. As the business has grown, so has the next generation of leadership. Today, John David has taken the reins and is guiding G&S into the future, while John Steele has transitioned into a consulting role.

G&S Supply Co. now offers turnkey solutions in roofing, siding, decking, and seamless gutters, serving both residential and commercial customers. The company has also developed an exclusive exterior trim brand known as ExtremeWeatherPink. Easily recognized during construction on new homes, this distinctive pink trim has become an industry hallmark and is widely known as a G&S original. As Steele often says, “It’s amazing how many people recognize us as the Pinkwood guys.”

Operating from a distribution center in Summerville, G&S delivers products and services throughout the coastal regions from Bluffton to Myrtle Beach.
